SPRINGFIELD – As the government shutdown enters its second week, Democrats in the U.S. Senate last night continued to block funding legislation to reopen the government. The Republican-backed clean continuing resolution (CR), which would have kept the government open through November 21, received 52 votes – falling short of the 60 required to overcome a filibuster. The Democratic alternative, which includes $1.5 trillion in new spending for just one month of keeping government funding extended, failed by a 45–55 margin.
